Dog Days of Summer

August 8, 2016

To think that it’s August really blows my mind,

I’ve had since May to prepare for school…so why am I still behind?

It’s been a full summer, my nest had more feathers,

Oh, how I love having everyone together.

Around here, it’s an All-You-Can-Eat summer,

So in turn, my stretchy shorts are tighter…good gosh, what a bummer.

The vacations come and go, more deposits into my memory bank.

And the house gets fuller, but so does my emotional tank.

Wisdom teeth get removed, I’m a nurse all over again,

“Can’t you clean out your own empty tooth sockets?”

I ask that as water from the syringe bounces off of my chin.

My house is a bonafide grocery store, food drawers filled to the brim,

The eating is abundant, especially after they swim.

I can’t go to bed early, I get made fun of you see,

But everyone knows to leave dad alone, how does he get off Scott-free?

But I’ve reached the age where I don’t care if you make fun of me,

Just stop taking pictures of my groggy face for all your Snapchat friends to see.

College boy was a camp counselor, so he was home for just a short time,

I didn’t like that one bit, but Wayne told me not to whine.

Wait, Caroline’s college applications are due real soon?

Didn’t we just do that for Jack??

That’s it. I’m going back to my cocoon.

The baby of the family has started to drive (!!)

Glad to know I can live, even when my life flashes before my eyes.

My sister’s pup stayed with us for a week…and I was elated,

But my dog didn’t feel the same way…by week’s end he needed to be medicated.

But I know the summers are coming where the pool water will stand still,

And the refrigerator and cabinets won’t need to be as filled.

When I can go to bed whenever I want,

And look out the window where zero cars are parked out front.

But in the meantime, I’ll hang on to summer’s not-so-lazy days,

And realize that I’ll miss the heck out of them when they have gone away.

So here’s to a new school year, getting back into a beloved routine,

And finding a way to fit back into my favorite jeans!

***I’ll be posting some new recipes in the next week. Check back if you can remember!
